Tutti viaggiamo. Nell’immaginazione, nella realtà, nel passato e nel futuro. Gli eredi della cultura classica, i popoli di lingua neolatina possono definire ancora più intensa la loro appartenenza alla universale “esperienza di viaggio” dell’umanità, se in quelle lingue hanno scritto i più grandi viaggiatori, navigatori, scopritori, commercianti di ogni tempo. In ogni viaggio cogliamo un momento spirituale, in cui accadono lo smarrimento dell’io e il suo ritrovamento, in cui cominciamo a dubitare in virtù della nostra esistenza divenuta routine. Tendiamo ad avere uno sguardo omogeneo sulle culture lontane da noi (africane, asiatiche, sudamericane), e difficilmente prendiamo coscienza della reciprocità di questo sguardo: per esse siamo semplicemente e unanimemente “europei”. Nel corso del viaggio si propone sempre uno scontro fra il nostro mondo e il mondo straniero, che spesso provoca un vero e proprio shock culturale. L’obbligo di rinuncia alla nostra stabilità interiore può condurre, attraverso lo spostamento, alla possibilità di arricchimento dell’anima. Tale dualità è la base della cultura europea e il nostro convegno ne desiderava esplorare prima di tutto gli aspetti letterari e artistici. La riflessione sulla spiritualità non coincide qui con l’esoteria, né con l’occultismo. In luogo della commercializzazione banalizzante della spiritualità il nostro convegno si è impegnato all’analisi comparativa di opere letterarie che mettano al centro l’interpretazione dell’intelletto e della spiritualità umane. Opere letterarie che si pongano come scopo l’accostamento linguistico della spiritualità attraverso l’esperienza del viaggio. Principali parole chiave e temi proposti erano: viaggio e ricerca di un cammino; viaggio e scoperta; viaggio e trasmissione culturale; viaggio e iniziazione; viaggio come esperienza estetica; viaggio come pellegrinaggio, il viaggio dell’anima; viaggi immaginari, la lettura come forma di viaggio; la rappresentazione visuale e verbale dell’esperienza del paesaggio; viaggio come shock culturale, la migrazione e il cambiar luogo come fuga, momento di conoscenza, gioia e pellegrinaggio – nelle letterature delle lingue neolatine, ovvero la relazione di esse (ma non solo) con la letteratura ungherese e gli ambienti culturali della Mitteleuropa.
Il numero presente di Verbum propone alcuni degli interventi del convegno in versione scritta e si propone di continuare la pubblicazione degli atti con gli articoli di lingua francese nel prossimo numero.

    Absztrakt Both Carlo Goldoni and Carlo Gozzi, leading Venetian playwrights of the 18th century, are regarded as reformers of the Commedia dell’Arte, but while Goldoni followed the direction of realism, Gozzi insisted on using certain elements of the above mentioned genre, completing it with exotic environments and magical episodes, all realized on stage with the help of the Baroque stage machinery. The rivalry between the two authors is one of the most interesting episodes of the history of 18th century theatre, and its most exciting period is undoubedly the one when Goldoni, after the successes of his character comedies and before writing his most developed choral comedies, hesitated for a few years, searching for new ways of expression, and wrote tragicomedies in Gozzi’s style, entering thus in an open competition with his rival. These tragicomedies were written at the end of the 1750s, in verse, with completely unrealistic plots, and with charactres who live in exotic countries, far away from Venice. Also in Paris, in the last phase of his career, Goldoni started to write again some fairy tale-like comedies, among the characters of which we find the typical figures of the Commedia dell’Arte. The intention of the present study is to confront the dramaturgical roles and the characteristics of the magic travels in Goldoni’s and Gozzi’s comedies in different moments of their careers, especially in Il genio buono e il genio cattivo (The Good Spirit and the Evil Spirit) by Goldoni and La donna serpente (The Serpent Woman) by Gozzi, with a hint also to how they use the exotic environments in La sposa persiana (The Persian Bride) (Goldoni) and Turandot (Gozzi).

    Absztrakt The novel “Doberdo” by Máté Zalka, a literary work that strongly captured the attention of the Hungarian readers in the second post-war period, contributing to the “popularization” of some Italian place names clearly present in the Hungarian imagery (Doberdo, Isonzo and Piave are the most frequent, even in some popular songs still very famous today), begins with a journey on the ridotta (military train), a journey with a not always known destination, from which one is not always sure to return, a journey that creates a period of suspension before the imminent war. The vision of the Italian front (the Carso) during the First World War is one of the reasons, in Hungarian literature, for a radical change from the previous experiences of Hungarian writers in Italy: starting from 1915 they go towards the borders of Italy to “defend the homeland”, to write war correspondences that exalt the warlike virtue of the “KuK” army (but above all of the royal ones), to describe the sometimes disastrous state in which the bombed cities find themselves almost to the ground (as in the case of Gorizia). How much Italy has changed compared to the previous visions of the Italo-maniacs, those who had found their new homeland in Rome, Florence, Venice!

    Absztrakt The article discusses the narrative experience of Giorgio Pressburger, the Hungarian- Italian-Jewish writer and dramatist. He argues in his writings that the concept of identity as a warranty of a people’s survival can reach the moment of getting rid of the obsession of identity, of coming to feel to be a member of “the human community of the living and the dead”.

    Absztrakt The paper presents the relationship of the poet, writer and translator Zoltán Jékely (1913–1982) with Italy and Italian culture, focusing on his two prolonged stays in Rome. In 1940 and in 1948, Jékely had an opportunity to spend a few months at the Hungarian Academy in Rome. His hitherto unpublished diaries and correspondence, forming part of the legacy, allow us not only to reconstruct the events during those stays but also to assess their influence on him. The paper highlights events to which the author attributed a special, spiritual significance. Throughout his life, and especially while travelling, Jékely was careful to register signals directed at him, events whose importance transcended everyday life, and was personally touched by the hidden beauties of the cities he visited.

    Absztrakt In our essay the Bajtinian notion of dialogism is applied to the intertextual dialogue that is established between some themes of Cervantes’s Don Quixote and two “producers of discourses” of the 20th century: the Italian Italo Calvino (1903–1985) and the Latvian Zigmunds Skujiņš (1926). We will try to demonstrate how a literary motif of fantastic features – the survival of a human being divided into two halves by the effect of a violent action – offers the three writers the possibility of describing a journey of (self) knowledge. In Don Quixote all the adventures of Alonso Quijano have been part of a learning process necessary for Alonso to understand his condition and heal his madness before saying goodbye to the world. In Il visconte dimezzato Calvino establishes a explicitly declared dialogue with Cervantes: he outlines for his “unfolded protagonist” and his grandson (the narrator) a journey of self-understanding that focuses on the problem of contemporary man, alienated and incapable to be fully realized. Finally, in the novel Como piezas de un domino, through the motive of the disintegration of the human being Skujiņš reflects on the national identity and draws for his characters a journey through history, dominated by the themes of disintegration and duplicity of identity.
  • Il motivo dei viaggi nell’autobiografia di Vittorio Alfieri

    Absztrakt Vittario Alfieri was one of the greatest poets and autobiographers, and also one of the greatest travellers of the 18th century, during what we consider to be the period of great voyages (and the era of philosophical empiricism). The many long journeys of Alfieri through Europe, reported in his autobiographical work Vita, are a series of mad flights (using the terminology of Dante, “folli voli”), reflecting a restless soul in search of himself. These journeys never brought the satisfaction of going, there was also the suffering of remaining next to the possibilities of gathering experiences of the world. Landscapes prepared him for his protoromantic poetic works, while the political ones matured him for his strong revolt against tyranny. His consciousness showed a mission of a judge writer (”scrittore tribuno”), a bard of freedom, and his categorical refusal of any type of absolute power, and an admiration for the parliamentary government of a “happy England”.

    Absztrakt The article shows the use of bucolic poetry in the works of Luigi Alamanni and examines in particular the author’s application of the traditional stylistic and linguistic device of “bucolic masking”, a typical characteristic of this kind of poetry, which intertwines his biography and his political and cultural commitment.

    Absztrakt Why rescue from oblivion the two works La fragua (1912) and El vértigo (1919) by the well-known Argentine playwright Armando Discépolo? The answer has to do with the point of view that in them, the tano, a new kind of personality, occupies a central stage in the dramatic conflicts that unfold. The perspective adopted in this paper will highlight: 1. the restorative function implied in the ideological structure that governs the representation of these foreign characters; 2. their dialogue with the stereotypes of the Italian bomber/drunkard and the gringa prostituta, terms used since the end of the century by the ruling elites to criminalize the foreigner; and 3. the high testimonial value of both works whose plots are deeply anchored in the immediate socio-political conjuncture.

    Absztrakt This paper aims to show that the place of enunciation influences the production of utterances about the discursive construction of events happening in another society. We take the example of two Belgian writers, Simon Leys and Charles Paron, who lived in Hong Kong and Beijing respectively during the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966–1976). The places where they lived induced original analyses and isolated them from their social fields, even beyond their ideological positions. We first study their relationship with both the Chinese Cultural Revolution and the discursive productions about it in Europe, and what drove them to write in forms that were unusual to them. We then analyze the conditions of construction of the representations of the revolution.
  • L’écriture au second degré de Jean Anouilh: l’exemple des personnages d’enfants

    Absztrakt The paper deals with the analysis of intertextuality in the plays written by Jean Anouilh with the special focus on child characters, especially on the character of a revolting son. Inspired by one of the plays by Roger Vitrac, such a character makes its first appearance in Anouilh’s dramatic world in 1948. It later becomes a permanent feature in his works and thus it creates the archetype of a son. Using the terminology established by Gérard Genette, we first describe the parallels between Vitrac’s and Anouilh’s plays, then we analyse the methods of macrotextual transcription, on which Anouilh keeps on focusing until the end of his literary career. We also explore the transitions from one play to another and we argue that such a return in cycles is a key factor in understanding the coherence, aesthetics and legacy of Anouilh’s plays written since the beginning of 1960s.

    Absztrakt The analysis of political language has been a consistent reality for many years in Italian linguistic studies. Since the early studies of Paola Desideri (1984), the attention to pragmatic aspects has been central to the discipline. The object of this contribution will be the parliamentary debates, as rendered in their official transcription. We gathered a small corpus (around 850 thousand words) from various periods that have distinguished Italian parliamentary history. Assuming as a starting point the first parliament of the Kingdom of Italy and moving towards the present day, we have decided to examine some pragmatic characteristics of these texts and verify the most recent developments. The study presents the fundamental objective of combining the analysis of political discourse in a diachronic pragmatics perspective to the methodological approach of corpus linguistics (through various tools, such as frequency lists, concordance lines, collocations) in order to investigate forms of the interaction between members of the Parliament, and the persistence in the texts of some of the aspects of spoken language.
