Introduction to the proceedings of the RODOSZ/4 Doctoral Conference in Romance Studies
The Doctoral Conference in Romance Studies “RODOSZ” (initially Romanisztikai Doktorandusz Konferencia, now called Romanista Doktoranduszok Konferenciája) was organised for the first time in 2009 by the doctoral schools of Eötvös Loránd University and Pázmány Péter Catholic University. Nine years have passed since two PhD students, Eszter Koós and I, proposed to set up the event, and the formerly nationwide conference that gathered together doctoral students from various fields of Romance studies has now become international. This fourth edition of the conference, organised by the ACRIL (Artes, Critica, Linguistica) research group of the Institute of Romance Studies of Pázmány Péter Catholic University, permitted twenty PhD students from eight different European countries to present their scientific work and to get an insight to a variety of research fields. The conference ran in two parallel sessions: a literary and a linguistic one. It was a great honour for us to invite Dr. Giuseppe Lupo from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan and Dr. Steffen Heidinger from University of Graz, who opened respectively the literary and the linguistic sessions with a plenary lecture.
In this volume of Verbum, a selection of ten double blind peer reviewed papers are published. They finely represent the diversity of the “RODOSZ” conference. In the field of Italian literature, almost all genres from the Middle Ages until the twentieth century are represented: Annamária Molnár investigates Boccaccio’s concept of women; Márton Szovák focuses on 17th-century letters as a genre; Balázs Kerber examines the relation of Pirandello and Szentkuthy to the phenomenon of modernity; and the paper of Marta Sterna reviews the elements of ancient drama as a source of inspiration for contemporary European playwrights. Two contributions concern the francophone culture and literature of the 20th century: the study of Ágnes Tóth deals with Médua, a fantastic short story by Maurice Carême, while Michael Schaub focuses on the representation of the Chinese Cultural Revolution by comparing essays of two Belgian authors, Simon Leys and Charles Paron. As for linguistics, the research fields of cognitive semantics, dialectology and second language acquisition are represented in this selection: Thomas Bertin’s paper deals with the lexical meaning of the French noun pied; Maria Boghiu analyzes Petrarch’s metaphors in a cognitivist approach; Mátyás Rosenberg presents his fieldwork data on Boyash, a set of dialects related to Romanian; and the paper of Timea Bánki focuses on how information structure should be built into the teaching of Spanish as a second language.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all colleagues for their help in organising and reviewing, and for their support during the whole event. I am convinced that the “RODOSZ” conference series will continue to be as useful and diversified as it has been so far.

- Le nom pied et la notion de stabilité

It aims at formulating a “semantic invariant” suiting this noun and offering a relevant picture of the semantic contribution it provides to French, regardless of its contextual meanings. After a short section giving an insight of our theoretical and methodological background, an overall description of the different acceptances of pied is drawn. Then, we develop a semantic analysis of the noun pied focusing on the notion of stability viewed as a way to express the idea of ‘standing in a vertical position’.
- La crisi moderna come visione: Pirandello, Szentkuthy ed il modernismo
Szerző Kerber, Balázs Füzet Vol. XIX/2018/1-2 Kategória RODOSZ/4 Oldal pp. 31-43 Absztrakt This paper focuses on the relation of Pirandello and Szentkuthy with the phenomenon of modernity. The two artists – despite their stylistic and genre differences – analyse the problems of the modern existential crisis in a very similar way. They interpret the crisis through powerful rhetorical images, and the importance of vision shows the deficiency of theoretical language and thinking. The vision becomes a method to examine the inner world. A certain parody of the philosophical language and systemizing attitude helps us understand the futility of fixed theories. The paper mainly examines some of Pirandello’s narrative works, his noted essay on the modern crisis, Arte e coscienza d’oggi, his last and incomplete play, I giganti della montagna and Szentkuthy’s poetics in the 1930s through some of his novels. The analysis and the comparison will perhaps demonstrate some interesting common motives in the modern interpretation of literary vision.
- La metafora nell’Epistola Posteritati di Francesco Petrarca: Un approccio cognitivista
Szerző Boghiu, Maria Füzet Vol. XIX/2018/1-2 Kategória RODOSZ/4 Oldal pp. 45-57 Absztrakt Metaphors have been long considered just some other figures of speech but this perspective has lately changed due to the cognitivist approach which considers the metaphor a fundamental tool of our conceptual system allowing abstract reasoning. In the light of this approach, I propose an analysis of the metaphors in Petrarch’s Letter to Posterity along with a picture of the conceptual schemes outlined by the text. This means both image-metaphors, which are still recognizable as figures of speech, and lexicalized-metaphors, in which the language user fails to perceive the metaphorical connections between the source-domain and the target-domain. The analysis of these connections is followed by a quantitative analysis, which allows us to recognize the most representative schemes and the most productive source domains. Besides that, a Latin text of a bilingual author allows us to follow the steps of a metaphorical expression in diachrony, that is, to check whether the expression is productive or not, and if it can be found in contemporary Romance languages, with a special focus on Italian.
- La estructura informativa en la enseñanza del español como lengua extranjera

In these languages, there exists a kind of organizing principle which can be described and taught. Contemporary linguistics focuses on the information structure of different languages; however, we can find few traces of their results in second language acquisition and in textbooks. Classroom research also focuses on students’ knowledge of information structure and not on how this knowledge can be incorporated into foreign language studies. In my work I will try to answer the following questions: which fundamentals of information structure should be built into the teaching of Spanish as a second language in Hungary? To what extent do the results of a classroom experiment support the above questions?
- Elementi del dramma antico nell’opera Pescatori di Raffaele Viviani. Delineazione della questione
Szerző Sterna, Marta Füzet Vol. XIX/2018/1-2 Kategória RODOSZ/4 Oldal pp. 71-86 Absztrakt The ancient Greek drama after so many centuries has still been an indisputable source of inspiration for contemporary European playwrights, including those from Italy. Raffaele Viviani, regarded as one of the most prominent authors of the Neapolitan theatre in the 20th century, together with his work Pescatori (The Fishermen), published in 1925, can be a perfect example of it. The work is a unique research material with regard to its connections to antiquity. It is rich in elements that are not only related to the tradition of Greek drama but also, in certain cases, mirror its classical patterns. The aim of this article is to point to those inspirations. Due to the fact that the subject has not been discussed in any scientific publication and, taking into account that it is a very extensive question deserving to be analysed in detail, this article outlines the matter and points to further directions in terms of the research subjects that I undertook.
- Boccaccio fra la “misoginia” del Corbaccio e il “femminismo” del De mulieribus claris
Szerző Molnár, Annamária Füzet Vol. XIX/2018/1-2 Kategória RODOSZ/4 Oldal pp. 87-98 Absztrakt Boccaccio’s concept of women has been raising a number of questions for centuries, to which the scientific research often gave extreme answers. Among these questions the most frequent one may be a stereotyped “misogynious Boccaccio” point of view, based on his Corbaccio, but leaving out of consideration his other works. But what reasons led to this opinion? How could a misread part of Decameron (VIII,7) support it? Is this kind of blame righteous on Boccaccio? To answer this problem the researcher should not only thoroughly investigate Corbaccio and provide an overview of the full Boccaccian oeuvre but also clarify certain questions of literary genres and traditions of Ancient and Medieval literature that have fallen into oblivion.
- Identificación y diferenciación lingüísticas de los gitanos boyash de Hungría
Szerző Rosenberg, Mátyás Füzet Vol. XIX/2018/1-2 Kategória RODOSZ/4 Oldal pp. 99-117 Absztrakt There are thousands of gypsies in Hungary and its neighboring countries, living mainly in small settlements or villages speaking varieties of so called Boyash/Bayash. The varieties in question have been regarded both as dialects of the Romanian language, and as dialects of an Ausbau language. They are also known as “Vlach”, “Rudari”, “tub-makers” or “spoon-carvers”, with reference to their language and by their traditional occupation, respectively. According to earlier research, the Boyash were divided by researchers into various ethnic subgroups, each of them self-identifying as Boyash, forming a relatively coherent community, and speaking clearly related language varieties. Relying on my fieldwork data, my recent research suggests that the linguistic situation of the communities using dialects related to Romanian as their mother tongue are much more heterogeneous and complex. In my paper, I discuss some of the language-related questions.
- Espugnazione per negati: La fortezza di Kanizsa al centro di un trattato secentesco di arte militare
Szerző Szovák, Márton Füzet Vol. XIX/2018/1-2 Kategória RODOSZ/4 Oldal pp. 119-127 Absztrakt The Discorso sopra l’espugnatione della fortezza di Canissa of Federico Ghislieri is a peculiar example of the changes in scientific literature at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. In a letter to an Italian prince, Ghislieri outlined his plans to occupy the fortress of Kanizsa relying on his own experiences at the siege of the same stronghold in 1601. In this paper, I first make an attempt to place this work in the oeuvre of Ghislieri, and then I examine the characteristics of the genre of the letter.
- Chant et regard médusant – Maurice Carême : Médua
Szerző Tóth, Ágnes Füzet Vol. XIX/2018/1-2 Kategória RODOSZ/4 Oldal pp. 129-139 Absztrakt The subject of this study is Médua, a short story by Maurice Carême that incorporates all kinds of features one can encounter in fantastic literature: unexpected, supernatural elements, madness, duplication, metamorphosis. The short story is analyzed from the point of view of how physical interactions and their representations appear in it, especially the face and the eyes. The desire to understand the inconceivable leads us to the question of artistic identification, the profession of writing. Artistic responsibility does not only entail joy but also fear. To illustrate this, the writer uses the mythological story of Medusa as an allegory for the transfixing and cathartic force of writing.
- Simon Leys et Charles Paron face à la Révolution culturelle : Lieux d’énonciation et constructions
Szerző Schaub, Michael Füzet Vol. XIX/2018/1-2 Kategória RODOSZ/4 Oldal pp. 141-152 Absztrakt This paper aims to show that the place of enunciation influences the production of utterances about the discursive construction of events happening in another society. We take the example of two Belgian writers, Simon Leys and Charles Paron, who lived in Hong Kong and Beijing respectively during the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966–1976). The places where they lived induced original analyses and isolated them from their social fields, even beyond their ideological positions. We first study their relationship with both the Chinese Cultural Revolution and the discursive productions about it in Europe, and what drove them to write in forms that were unusual to them. We then analyze the conditions of construction of the representations of the revolution.
- “Naturam ars imitatur”: Magical images within Marsilio Ficino’s De Vita Libri Tres

Füzet Vol. XIX/2018/1-2 Kategória Artes Oldal pp. 155-180 Absztrakt This article analyses the philosophical discussion of magic in De vita libri tres (1489), written by the fifteenth-century philosopher Marsilio Ficino (1433–1499). Through a close reading of passages on magical talismans and objects (such as a cubiculum,) the paper argues that Ficino not only expounded his ambivalent metaphysical theories on matter and form but also eroded the formula of naturam ars imitatur. Ficino’s discussion of magic thus oscillates between a re-interpretation of classical and medieval magic theories and a new cultural and scientific self-understanding of the individual as artifex of nature.
- The identity of papal soldiers in the early modern age
Szerző Brunelli, Giampiero Füzet Vol. XIX/2018/1-2 Kategória Artes Oldal pp. 181-199 Absztrakt The disproportion between the continuous attention to the military orders by the popes of the early modern age and the meager results obtained is evident. However, these were not imposed by the religious foundations of the State of the Church. The pope’s army never worked effectively because it failed to build a peculiar identity for those who militated within it. By resorting to sociology, this paper traces the mechanisms of identity building and shows the cultural proposal of a “Soldier of the Holy Church”, with repercussions in military legislation and even in the history of art. This proposal was only partly accepted, as documents indicate. In fact, it had to coexist with other forms of identity, already internalized by officers and soldiers, based on other values. Ultimately, this conflict of identity was the real cause of the weakness of the pope’s army.
- I rapporti tra Tamás Bakóc ed Ippolito I d’Este (1496–1520)
Szerző Kristóf, Ilona Füzet Vol. XIX/2018/1-2 Kategória Artes Oldal pp. 201-220 Absztrakt The focus of the paper is the relationship of Ippolito d’Este and Tamás Bakóc between 1498 and 1520. The importance of these personalities lies in the fact that as prelates of the Hungarian church and cardinals, they were often on the opposite sides in the intricate diplomatic relationship of Hungary, Rome, Venice and the Habsburgs. Although their tough conflicts in the political field are evident, they seemingly held regular contact with each other on issues concerning the daily management of their Hungarian dioceses. The court of Ippolito in Eger could rely on the advices of the Archbishop of Esztergom not only in the field of management, but concerning the problems of everyday life or even those of Hungarian politics. They both intended to maintain a balanced relationship, respecting the interests of the other side. Concentrating on the mutually beneficial issues, they apparently tried to profit from each other despite their occasional political conflicts.
- La famiglia Boér di Nagyberivó e ruolo suo nella guerra d’indipendenza di Rákóczi
Szerző Demjén, Balázs Füzet Vol. XIX/2018/1-2 Kategória Artes Oldal pp. 221-229 Absztrakt The Romanians participating in the uprising of 1703–1711 can be divided into four groups: the people in the rising army sporadically documented by the scripts, as well as the heroes of the popular tradition, in connection with the Greek Catholic–Orthodox dichotomy. Furthermore, we can observe those in a diplomatic relationship with the two Romanian principalities, Valachia and Moldva, and finally, we can talk about the families supporting Rákóczi – especially the Boér family of Nagyberivó.
The Greek Catholic family had three main (Szkorei, Kövesdi, Berivói) and more than twenty less important branches by the 17th and 18th century. In the Kövesdi Boér family we can find Ferenc (?–1720), the stepfather of the famous exiled writer, Kelemen Mikes (1690–1761), who also participated in the war of independence; while the Nagyberivói Boér branch had several members supporting Prince Rákóczi, such as Sámuel (the richest one, tradesman of cereals, with Valachian principal relations), Tamás (writer of a memorandum of loyalty to the Prince in Fogaras, 1705) and Zsigmond (gregarius member of Rákóczi’s Noble Society since 1708). The Nagyberivói Boér family had also intensive exchange of ideas (even parental relationship in some cases) with other families of Romanian origin in Transylvania (e.g., Sztojka, Sztán, Thalaba) during the uprising.
The bibliography mainly contains the archival scripts of the family Boér of Nagyberivó but there are also publications of sources published since 1873 until today (Archivum Rákóczianum I–XII, Letterbook of the Transilvanian Consilium, Scripts of Pál Ráday I–II).
- Per un ricordo dell’amicizia friburghese tra Jean de Menasce e Gianfranco Contini
Szerző Paolini, Michele Füzet Vol. XIX/2018/1-2 Kategória Artes Oldal pp. 231-268 Absztrakt This work aims to outline a comprehensive account of the intellectual friendship that developed in Fribourg, Switzerland in 1938, between the Dominican Jean de Menasce, a converted Jew, a Hungarian baron, the first to translate T. S. Eliot into French, and the young Gianfranco Contini, already a well-known Italian philologist and literary critic. We emphasize the strategic character of this friendship, inspired by an esprit européen that had deep speculative and epistemological roots, and nourished by the thought of Jacques Maritain, who exercised specific influences on the cultural environment of the University of Fribourg at that time.

Pablo Füzet Vol. XIX/2018/1-2 Kategória Linguistica Oldal pp. 271-298 Absztrakt Grammatical gender has caused controversial discussions between linguists and between people outside linguistics. This article does absolutely not pretend to create more controversy and its goals are: (1) to suggest an alternative definition of gender as grammatical category and to define the means to express it in Spanish; (2) to deal with the incompatibility between proper noun and our concept of grammatical gender, as well as with the restrictions of pronouns with grammatical gender, and (3) at the same time as we analyse the acceptability of three arguments that usually are used to characterise Spanish as a sexist language, we propose an alternative characterisation of gender distinction in this language.
