  • Humanism and Theology in Renaissance Florence: four examples (Caroli, Savonarola, Ficino, and Pico)
    Szerző Edelheit, Amos
    Füzet Vol. VIII/2006/2
    Kategória Artes
    DOI 10.1556/Verb.8.2006.2.1
    Oldal pp. 271-290
Kulcsszavak humanism, philosophy, theology, renaissance, Florence
Absztrakt The argument in this article is that we should not make clear-cut distinctions between humanism and philosophy or theology, and between the humanists and their contemporary scholastic theologians and philosophers, in the Florentine context of the second half of the fifteenth century. The relations between these two groups were complicated and included, beyond obvious differences, also mutual influences, not always discussed in detail among modern scholars. Starting from the known controversy between Eugenio Garin and Paul Oskar Kristeller regarding the nature of the humanist movement and its relations with philosophy, I then move-on to present four examples: the first two deal with "scholastic" theologians and preachers, the Dominicans Giovanni Caroli and Girolamo Savonarola, in whom I emphasize the humanist bias; the last two deal with humanist philosophers, Marsilio Ficino and Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, in whom I emphasize the importance of religion and theology for the understanding of their philosophy.
  • Dilemme du verbal versus visuel: Analyse des images dans L'Homme aux valises d'Ionesco

    Oldal pp. 291-298
Kulcsszavak Eugène Ionesco, performance, vision, Alfred Jarry, image
Absztrakt There is a tendency these days that makes us move away from the text to the direction of performance. The distinguished role of the text is becoming weaker; interest is focused on forms of expression that also stimulate our senses. The relation between the writer Ionesco and this tendency is close. Temporally considered, writing gives its place to messages which are made for the eyes: the ageing Ionesco is losing his belief in the power of the text, he only creates paintings near the end of his life. Also, sacred Christian, Tibetan, zen, etc. texts teach him the respect of silence. And silence gives place to images. This paper presents these issues with the help of an interpretation of one of Ionesco's plays, written in 1975, L'homme aux valies.

Kulcsszavak Octave Mirbeau, travel, joy, journal, travelogue
Absztrakt Certain passages in OctaveMirbeau's novels tend to subdue the imprecatory character of his fiction. This paper addresses what is referred to as espaces de bonheur 'spaces of joy' in La 628-E8 (1907), a personal account of Mirbeau's travels through Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, which displays a number of characteristically modern features - a hybrid journal, travelogue and "self-fiction" - and in which three spaces are explored that please and relieve the author's sensitivity and writing: the automobile itself, the harbour, and art, embodiments of genius, grace, and human effort.
  • Français écrit - français parlé dans L'Amant de Marguerite Duras

    Füzet Vol. VIII/2006/2
    Kategória Critica
    DOI 10.1556/Verb.8.2006.2.4
    Oldal pp. 317-324
Kulcsszavak the passage as a narrative strategy, le métissage linguistique, Marguerite Duras, L'Amant, verbal/non-verbal communication
Absztrakt This paper focuses on "the passage", the key term and key place of the setting in Marguerite Duras's L'Amant: namely the apartment where the couple in love meets and finds their shelter. This place acts on the one hand as the space of communication (whether verbal or nonverbal), which contributes to the continual formation of the female character's identity in the text. On the other hand, "the passage" is understood and analysed as the narrative strategy (that is, the organization or the composition of the text) of this prose with autobiographical features. Moreover, "le métissage linguistique" manifested in L'Amant is illustrated and commented on.

Kulcsszavak Richard Millet, written language, spoken language, French, literature
Absztrakt The language of the contemporary French author Richard Millet is often considered to be excessively traditional. The author strictly adheres to the stylistic rules of the written language which is in contrast with the spoken language of his characters. This study concentrates on the aesthetic effects of this tension between the spoken and written French in Millet's texts published in the last ten years.

Kulcsszavak verbal categories, idiomatic categories, theory of language, description of languages
Absztrakt The definition of noun, adjective, verb and adverb currently does not find a general agreement in the scope of Hispanic linguistics. There have been many definitions with various different criteria. Thus, morphological, lexical, syntactic and even logical arguments have been used. Such diversity in the use of criteria is translated in an accumulation of definitions that vary from author to author and which results in the cataloguing of noun, adjective, verb and adverb representatives based on currents or on individual authors. Since, as it seems to be generally recognised, examples of each of the groups exist in more than one language it seems advisable to try to establish definitions that leave apart the particularities of each language and gather the essence of the noun, adjective, verb and adverb beings. The location of representatives of each of these categories and the description of the schemes in which they materialized will correspond to the scope of each language (that is, the determination of the idiomatic categories in each language). We present here a classification of these idiomatic categories applied to Spanish.
  • Les termes juridiques français et slovaques du point de vue de leur formation et de leur motivation
    Szerző Kupčihová, Katarína
    Füzet Vol. VIII/2006/2
    Kategória Linguistica
    DOI 10.1556/Verb.8.2006.2.7
    Oldal pp. 373-383
Kulcsszavak juridical terminology, word-formation, compound, compounding, intralinguistic motivation
Absztrakt The paper focuses on a highly specific lexical field of juridical terminology. The analysis of the word-formation process, which is generally called compounding, takes into consideration two types of coining new words in French, "proper" and "improper" compounding. These two types are compared to their Slovak equivalents in order to investigate differences in their motivation.
  • Faute de langue, faute de traduction
    Szerző Pleciński, Jacek
    Füzet Vol. VIII/2006/2
    Kategória Linguistica
    DOI 10.1556/Verb.8.2006.2.8
    Oldal pp. 385-389
Kulcsszavak translation error, idiomatic expression, target language, situational level in translation, subtitles
Absztrakt This paper highlights the difference between linguistic error and translation error. In doing so so, the author provides an analysis of two "extreme" translations. The first one, by a Polish female student of French, cumulates all imaginable mistakes (concerning both comprehension and translation into the foreign language). The second one is a one-sentence subtitle from a film, inadvertently translated from Spanish into (native) Polish. The translation (which should have been carried out with a word-for-word translation) was put into Polish by the translator using a dynamic equivalent of an idiomatic expression. The dynamic equivalent does not match the scene in the film.

Kulcsszavak retranslation, intercultural relations, culturebound terms in translation, French translation, Polish literature in france
Absztrakt The phenomenon of retranslation may be accounted for in a number of ways. Some of the commonly mentioned factors are: the ageing of the existing translation(s), the necessity to introduce corrections or improvements, and commercial reasons, too. Some case studies show that other factors can lead to retranslation, namely those resulting from the needs of the target culture. The present paper offers yet another possible explantion. The case of several French renditions of the Polish national epic Pan Tadeusz (1834) by Adam Mickiewicz, shows that the needs of the original culture can also motivate retranslation.

    Füzet Vol. VIII/2006/2
    Kategória Linguistica

    Oldal pp. 407-415
Kulcsszavak polylexical units, idioms, collocations, compound nouns, substantival syntagmes
Absztrakt The present article is a terminological reflection on lexical units within substantival syntagmes, such as idioms, collocations and compound nouns. A short introduction on polylexical units on the N+Adj model underlines the variety of possible terminological confusions, and puts forward a new criterion aiming at defining the peculiar linguistical status of polylexical units. It is necessary indeed to take the duality of the reference and actualization levels into consideration.

Kulcsszavak Middle Ages, chantefable, spoken language, written language, oral tradition
Absztrakt The present paper presents elements which are characteristic of both spoken and written language, included in the anonymous work Aucassin et Nicolette. The text constitutes the only example of chantefable, a literary genre from the 13th century. Chantefable is a written text; however, it evidently includes some features of the oral tradition.

Kulcsszavak dit, antifeminsim, Middle Ages, oral poetry, Rutebeuf
Absztrakt The dit is a special literary form which appeared in the 13th century. As a didactic genre, one of its preferred topics is women who are mostly depicted in a negative way, a rather common practice in the Middle Ages. The dit is midway between oral and written poesy, which is an indication of a large scale change in the society of the 13th century. This paper analyzes the features of written and oral poesy in seven dits about women composed in the 13th and 14th centuries.

Kulcsszavak orientalizing, orality, improvisation, cliché, hero
Absztrakt The present paper deals with the work of Albert Cohen and how it is influenced by orality. Albert Cohen was inspired by the style of the stories in the The Book of Thousand Nights and One Night in a way that we can call his technique "orientalizing". After a methodological introduction concerning the conception of orality, we discuss the indications of orality at the various structure levels of Cohen's text: the extradiegetic narrator (Cohen dictated his texts to "the women of his life" and used the method of improvisation), the elocutio (characters are differentiated on the basis of their utterances; the style demonstrates clichés and idiomatic expressions), the construction of the plot (the hero follows the traditional journey), and the alternation of the narrative levels (extradiegetic and diegetic). Finally, we determine the functions of orality in Cohen's work and the author's intention.

Kulcsszavak masculine narration, first person narration, rhetorics, indirect and direct discourse, failure of self-expression
Absztrakt The first-person narrator of Prévost abbé's Histoire d'une Grecque moderne tells the story of his relationship with a beautiful Greek woman. The relation starts with a dialogue realized in a seraglio and this type of reported communication will dominate the whole narration. Most of these dialogues take place as part of a persuasion process: the actors try to persuade each other, and on his turn, the narrator tries to persuade the reader. The letter - the written communication par excellence - substitutes the dialogue between the actors only once, at a crucial moment of the story. This situation emphasizes one of the central problems raised by the novel: the failure of self-expression and mutual understanding.

Kulcsszavak literary translation, socially marked speech, popular speech varieties, orthographical problems, imaginaire linguistique
Absztrakt Difficulties of translating socially marked speech from French into Hungarian are analyzed. The corpus is based on a French crime fiction by Fred Vargas, translated into Hungarian by myself. Firstly, I deal with the strategies and techniques of social marking in the French version. Then, I turn to the Hungarian translation and see whether the socially marked character of the original text could be rendered and, if yes, what kind of markers were used. Differences seem to arise from the fact that popular French, as a register, does not have a perfect equivalent in Hungarian. This "deficiency" becomes most striking in the domain of syntax. While the French author uses mainly syntactic devices to mark popular speech, the translationmust rely on phonetic and lexical markers, given that syntactic differences between standard Hungarian and its non-standard varieties are almost null. Also, while markers are clearly popular throughout the French version, the Hungarian translation renders either a dialectically marked speech, for non-Parisian popular French speakers, or a kind of urban slang, for Parisian popular French speakers.

Kulcsszavak neologism, argo, musicians, lexical creativity, verbal play
Absztrakt This paper is a study of neological processes of musicians' argot. The most powerful creative element is the metaphorical use of common terms, which represents two thirds of the examined corpus. The metaphor is also the base of lexicalization and compounding. Some typical processes, such as suffixation, back derivation, conversion, abbreviation and borrowing, exemplify formal neology. The most important aspects of neologism include verbal play and the linguistic deformation.

Kulcsszavak idiomaticity, pragmatics, semantics, subjectivity, dialogicity
Absztrakt Frozen subject idioms can be classified into three, pragmatically based classes: evocatives, evaluatives, and diologic. These groups are characterized by diverse syntactic behaviour. In this paper, we provide evidence that the three classes represent separate degrees of subjectivity in the language, and that this property increases parallel to that of being situationally bound.
