  • Per un ricordo dell’amicizia friburghese tra Jean de Menasce e Gianfranco Contini
    Author Paolini, Michele
    Issue Vol. XIX/2018/1-2
    Category Artes
    Pages pp. 231-268
Abstract This work aims to outline a comprehensive account of the intellectual friendship that developed in Fribourg, Switzerland in 1938, between the Dominican Jean de Menasce, a converted Jew, a Hungarian baron, the first to translate T. S. Eliot into French, and the young Gianfranco Contini, already a well-known Italian philologist and literary critic. We emphasize the strategic character of this friendship, inspired by an esprit européen that had deep speculative and epistemological roots, and nourished by the thought of Jacques Maritain, who exercised specific influences on the cultural environment of the University of Fribourg at that time.
  • Su una lettura saussurianaa
    Author Paolini, Michele
    Issue Vol. XVIII/2017/1-2
    Category Linguistica
    Pages pp. 231-243
Abstract The initial aim of this paper was to analyse, in the form of a brief informative book review, Massimo Prampolini’s work Ferdinand de Saussure (Roma, Carocci editore, 2017). This book aroused such a lively interest that it has prompted us to expand our original project. Current readings of Saussure’s work can be summarised as follows: an “early Saussure”, based on the publication of the Cours de linguistique générale (1916); a “second Saussure”, witnessed by his Écrits de linguistique générale (2002), documenting the research directed towards the philological study of the Swiss linguist’s manuscripts, and a “third Saussure”, “esoteric”, developed in the “theory of anagrams”, as can be seen in Saussure’s notes, for a long time unconsidered because unpublished, and unpublished because scientifically unsolved. The “second Saussure” offers the reader the most convincing multifaceted view of language which can be achieved today by reading Saussurean studies.

  • Definizione lessicografica e definizione scientifica: Il problema della selezione contestuale e circostanziale
    Author Paolini, Michele
    Issue Vol. XVI/2015/1-2
    Category Linguistica
    Pages pp. 203-218
Abstract We want to highlight the importance of some general questions about the research on definition. Mechanisms of selection based on context and circumstance determine the activation of operations aimed at specific parts of the global semantic field to which the single definitions relate. The definitions indicate the properties considered essential for these portions of the semantic field. In this regard, we have tested the existence of different levels of semantic organization of definitions. In particular, one explicit and one implicit. Finally, we observed several problems regarding the demarcation between lexicographical definition and definition of technical and scientific terms.
