Abstract: This paper deals with the problem of lexical grouping in two monolingual dictionaries of considerably different languages: on the one hand Robert méthodique, a dictionary of French, on the other Magyar Értelmez? Kéziszótár, a dictionary of Hungarian. As the Hungarian model, lacking in a coherent theoretical basis, seems inadequate, a new approach is being suggested with examples from the letter A/Á. The final part of the paper studies the effects of this new model on the macrostructure, especially as far as readability is concerned.
